Tonight, we're going to continue week two. If you didn't get a resource, it's back
Speaker:there on the table. Back there. But Pastor Barbie, let's. Let's give
Speaker:her as much time as she needs to prepare the Word, present the Word.
Speaker:We love you. As much time as I
Speaker:need. How much time you guys got?
Speaker:Oh, Lord. Okay, well, then we're just gonna jump in and see what the Lord
Speaker:has for us. I'm actually always excited about what the
Speaker:Lord has to say and what he has to share with us. And coming
Speaker:out of last week and laying the foundation for the rabbi, the master
Speaker:teacher, I was so excited about where he was going to take us this week,
Speaker:because this week we're coming at it from a little different angle. Last
Speaker:week we talked about our rabbi, the
Speaker:teacher teacher, the one who had mastered the subject matter
Speaker:and everything that that encompasses. And this week
Speaker:we're coming at it from the viewpoint and
Speaker:attitude of one of his students. One that we see only
Speaker:three times in Scripture. And we will
Speaker:just jump right in to that particular
Speaker:work. And then we're gonna. I wanna challenge you with a couple
Speaker:of things tonight, because when he challenges me, I get to
Speaker:you, right. I
Speaker:should have at least gotten an amen from April over there.
Speaker:I drag her into my messes all the time. Well, Father God, I thank you
Speaker:so much for your faithfulness, for your word and your truth and that it
Speaker:is alive, Father God. And I thank you, Lord, that you are
Speaker:sending your word for healing. That's what you do, Lord.
Speaker:You send your word and it heals your people. So, Father, whatever
Speaker:situation we're in tonight, we know, Lord, that your word brings
Speaker:healing. And so. So, Father, we're going to come under that word, under that truth
Speaker:tonight. And I ask, Lord, that you impart what you would impart. Let my
Speaker:stuff fall in your stand in Jesus name. Amen.
Speaker:Amen. So we're going to start with one particular scripture this
Speaker:week. We're talking about the Rabbi session, two better things.
Speaker:Now, it happened as they went that he entered a certain village and
Speaker:a certain woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She
Speaker:had a sister, Mary, who sat at Jesus feet and heard his
Speaker:words. But Martha was distracted with much serving,
Speaker:and she approached him and said, lord, do you not care that
Speaker:my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore, tell
Speaker:her to help me. Now, let me pause for just a second, because isn't that
Speaker:kind of the pattern that we take? Lord, do you see this? And then we
Speaker:want to tell him how we would like him to Deal with our situation.
Speaker:Right. You know, tell. Can you even imagine?
Speaker:Of course you can imagine because you do it and I do it.
Speaker:It's not a real stretch for us to figure that one out.
Speaker:But that whole scene just gets me a little bit. It says, and
Speaker:Jesus answered and said to her, martha, Martha. Which is the
Speaker:preemptive of Brady Bunch. Marcia, Marcia,
Speaker:Martha, Martha. You are worried and troubled about many things, but
Speaker:one thing is needed, and Mary has chose what
Speaker:is better, and it will not be taken from her.
Speaker:I realize we have actually camped some in this particular passage of
Speaker:Scripture, well, last year and this year. But I think it's
Speaker:important. And what's really interesting is I actually saw.
Speaker:Once I had done that, I went. I saw a couple of other areas
Speaker:that the Lord was using this passage of Scripture. And I thought, okay, Lord, you
Speaker:got our attention. You've got our attention. So show us what you want to
Speaker:show us. And so the very first thing I want to ask you is this.
Speaker:When was the last time you sat at his feet?
Speaker:Now, see, this can be an uncomfortable question in some manner
Speaker:if we don't understand what that actually means. Right. You
Speaker:know, could you not tarry? You know,
Speaker:I have actually seen several. And in a different
Speaker:season in the church, you would see the At His Feet conference,
Speaker:women's conferences, all the time. And it was about spiritual
Speaker:intimacy and it was about coming to know and all of
Speaker:that. And that is absolutely accurate and it's absolutely
Speaker:true. But there's something else that is
Speaker:entailed in this. And as we get into this passage of Scripture, it's my
Speaker:hope that the Lord would show you something that challenges you,
Speaker:male and female, to find a place
Speaker:at his feet. Now, see, we're going to talk about Mary here,
Speaker:and we see her three times in Scripture, and I want to take you through
Speaker:each time that we see her, because if
Speaker:Jesus words in red is going to look at her and
Speaker:say, you have chosen the better thing, don't you want to know
Speaker:what the better thing is? Don't you want to know what that looks like
Speaker:and how that would play into your life?
Speaker:Let's see. Let's do this.
Speaker:What's interesting is I always, when I was a young, young
Speaker:Christian, when I was a young woman, and I really did
Speaker:understand this to only be, oh, that's like I said, spiritual
Speaker:intimacy. You know, that's just coming to know him in a different way. But if
Speaker:you bear it out in Scripture, it's something very different.
Speaker:See, in Jewish culture, I love.
Speaker:I love if we just Dig that the Lord will show us something that
Speaker:we haven't seen before, right? In Jewish cult, to sit
Speaker:at someone's feet was to declare
Speaker:yourself a disciple of that person.
Speaker:Let me read this to you right here. And we know this
Speaker:for a couple of reasons, is to declare yourself to be his
Speaker:disciple. And the boldness that it took Mary, in that moment,
Speaker:the first time we see her, to leave what she was doing and go
Speaker:and sit at his feet. It wasn't just a small thing, it
Speaker:was a huge thing. Look at this. Acts
:3 says, this is Paul.
:He says, I am a Jew,
:born in Tarsus of Sicilia, but
:brought up in this city, educated at the feet of
:Gamaliel according to the strictness of the law
:of our fathers. Paul, brought up
:at the feet of a scholar, brought up at the
:feet. And so this is something that we need to pay attention to when we
:see Mary go and take her place at the feet of Jesus. Let me read
:you this too. It said one biblical scholar,
:background, who does Jewish history. He said, people normally, when
:listening to a teaching, would sit on chairs or at banquets.
:They would recline on couches during those teachings. But
:disciples sat at the feet of their
:teachers. Serious disciples were preparing to be
:teachers. So they sat at the feet of
:the teacher. We see Mary,
:a woman who was not supposed to be taught in the first
:place and who was definitely not supposed to be taught by a
:rabbi and definitely not supposed to be taught
:with men. We see her leave
:this place and go into this room
:full of men. And she doesn't sit
:on the sofa, she doesn't recline at the table. She
:goes to his feet. Do you understand
:the declaration she was making in that moment? What she was saying
:is, teach me, teach
:me. We don't see anywhere in the
:Word where Jesus says, hey, Mary, come and join us. We don't
:say see anywhere where an invitation is given
:or permission is given for her to leave her task and come and
:join him. But she does.
:I said, lord, what kind of person does
:this, goes against the norms, steps
:out of the role that they thought they were supposed to fulfill,
:and breaks the rules in order to get to you.
:What was it in her that caused her to do this? And this is what
:I felt like. He said, to take a position at the feet was to
:act of bold humility.
:Bold humility.
:Ah,
:bold humility. I said, lord, what does that
:even mean? Because I don't think I had really heard that phrase before.
:And me being the scholar that I am, I put it in the Google search
:engine in a. Guys, listen to this. God
:can even use Google. I'm just telling you. Definition
:bold humility. Bold humility is a paradoxical
:concept combining courage and modesty. It
:allows leaders and individuals to confidently use their
:gifts and speak truth while remaining
:grounded, recognizing their limitations, and
:giving glory to God rather than themselves. Balancing
:conviction with gentleness and seeking growth
:over self preservation. It is about leading with
:strength and vulnerability, knowing when to act
:decisively and when to just sit still and
:listen. Is that not fabulous? That
:to me, that is amazing.
:Okay, the first amazing thing is that if you will
:sit and listen and ask him questions, he will
:answer them. I truly don't know that I
:had ever looked at that and gone, oh, she was.
:Mary had bold humility. I'm not that smart,
:seriously. But God was showing me an aspect of
:her nature that he had come to know that all of these
:generations later that I wanted to know about because I wanted
:to know what caused her to go to his feet.
:And then. Guys, oh my goodness. I asked that question too.
:What was the. What was the catalyst? I mean, she's in
:there obviously working with Martha.
:She's in there doing what she had planned to do.
:But then this happened. And we see it in Luke 10.
:It says, Martha was distracted with much
:serving. It says Mary, who also sat at the feet of Jesus
:and heard his words.
:She heard his words. And I can
:just see this one in my spirit because this is what I believe.
:Jesus words are the catalyst that moves us from distraction to
:what is actually needed in our life.
:See, there are things we want and there are things that we will present
:to the Lord as plans for our life. But when you begin to
:grab hold of the words of the Rabbi, of the Master,
:Teacher of Jesus, he begins to lead us toward what is
:actually needed in our lives.
:The distractions begin to fall away, begin to get
:drawn away as truth begins to pierce where we're living.
:See, his words do that. His words.
:People are moved by his words one way or the other.
:You cannot enter into a place where
:his words are dominant and not have a reaction.
:You're going to have a negative one or a positive one. The chief priests
:and Pharisees said, there never a man has spake
:like this man. Never. That's John
:46, John 4:6 and one says,
:were not our hearts burning within us while he was
:speaking. That's in Luke 24. He
:alone has the words of life,
:John 6. Can you even imagine what that must have been like
:to hear his words? From his own
:mouth. I think I would have had to throw the dish
:towel down, too. I think I would have had to gone into that room.
:And here's the thing, guys. I don't think. I don't think
:that Mary was even paying attention
:to who else was in the room, because it didn't matter
:who was in the room. She was after him. She was
:after his words.
:Huh? Is
:this going to work? Maybe not.
:We turn it when we choose to position
:ourselves at his feet, to be raised under the words of
:Jesus, just like Paul was raised
:under the words of his teacher,
:we position ourselves to become actual disciples
:of the faith. We begin to be
:discipled in coming under his word,
:in choosing, making the choice to position
:ourselves under the teaching of the
:Rabbi of the Teacher. We are making a conscious choice to
:allow ourselves to be discipled by the word
:of Truth. There's been a whole lot of talk about
:discipleship lately. A whole lot over in the 12, a whole lot
:in here. God is obviously dropping that into our spirits.
:But before you are discipled by any man or
:woman's words, may you be discipled by the words
:of Jesus Christ. Because he doesn't miss it.
:We miss it. We get it wrong. But if you will
:make this decision to sit at his
:feet, and you're not always gonna want to, you're not always gonna feel like it.
:There are always gonna be distractions. But throw the towel down,
:make a choice, and go sit at his feet.
:Hmm? We choose to be raised under his words.
:And here's the thing that I see in Mary and I, and I so love
:this. Her foundational revelation of J was as that
:of Teacher. That's what he shows us anyway. The very first
:time we see her is her listening to his words,
:making a bold act, and choosing to sit
:at his feet. Mary's foundational revelation
:of that was that of Jesus as teacher. Now, why
:does that matter? Why does that matter?
:Because I believe this. We
:come to identify with the Christ in accordance with our
:foundational revelations of his nature.
:We come to identify with him from that first
:place. Now, that's not where we're going to stay, but that's our first place
:as we get to know Him. Now, let me explain to you what that means
:or what that has meant in my life. So
:you might come to know Him, Carol. You might know him as
:healer because of everything he's done in your life. You know,
:you might know him as deliverer. You might know him as your
:peace because you've been walking through a Season of stress. And that is where
:you run to. That aspect of his nature has a tendency
:to be. Because that's what you know and that's what you're familiar with. That's where
:you run. Now, see, when I was a kid, I saw God as kind
:of like this wizard of Oz who was always asking us to go
:and get Satan's broomstick and bring it back to him in order to prove
:our loyalty in. And so my understanding
:of him was skewed. But I
:remember this day. I remember it had been a long
:day and it had been a hard day. Because
:when you're a kid and your dad leaves, sometimes
:there's stigma. Especially when I was a kid. Cause it wasn't like it was now.
:You know, there wasn't the level of understanding. There wasn't. And so there was a
:whole lot of taunting. And it was a specific day where parents were
:supposed to be at school and. And mom was working, and of course
:she couldn't make it. And my dad was gone, so he didn't. And it became
:the target that day of, well, you don't even have a dad. You don't
:even have a dad. And I just remember making it through my day, and I
:just remember thinking, I don't. I don't have a dad.
:And I remember running home and we had a mobile home at that time,
:and there was like one of those wooden wardrobes and.
:And I just remember crawling into that wardrobe and sitting on top of a stack
:of shoes and just being so broken in my
:spirit, having a concept and an understanding.
:I think I was 11 years old and it was hitting me. I
:don't have this. And I just. In my spirit, as I called out, I went,
:God, I don't have a father.
:God, I don't have a father. And as
:clearly as I have ever heard anything in
:my life, I heard him speak to my spirit. And he
:said, love, you have a father.
:Love, you have a father. And man,
:this seed went into my spirit. That. That gaping hole
:that had been there, he filled it in such a massive way,
:I knew as my
:father. And that that right there, that
:was my foundational revelation of who he was.
:And that foundational revelation has been where I
:have run to every single time because
:I come to him as a daughter. Now.
:See, your revelation might be something different, but because I have
:spent time with him, with him speaking wisdom and truth and
:protection and covering and all of those things that I might have
:expected from an earthly father, he
:poured into my life. And so my foundational
:revelation is that your place of revealed
:identity will become your most accessible space for spiritual intimacy.
:And from that intimacy, new revelations of his nature
:are birthed.
:Everything built on that foundation. I could trust
:him to cover me because he was my
:father. I could trust him to move on my behalf, to
:be my defender, because that was built on top of my
:relationship as him, as my father. That
:revelation, what is your
:primary revelation of the facets and nature
:of God? Mary ran to the teacher. And we're
:gonna see that again here in Scripture. Mary ran to the teacher because
:that's who she knew. He was teaching her,
:he was speaking truth to her. He was taking the limits and the
:boundaries off of her life that society had put on her
:life. And so she would run to his
:feet. Who do you run to
:when you pray? What's the first word?
:Father Jesus. Sometimes it's
:just, ugh,
:Foundational relationships.
:And see, here's this, that place, that place of
:intimacy of him teaching you and you sitting at his feet and
:him pouring over tea over you guys.
:It's the best thing in the world. It just is.
:It just is. And in that, in that,
:we can have a propensity to go, I'm just gonna stay right here
:forever. I'm just gonna stay right here forever.
:And that's wonderful. In that season
:when God is pouring into you and teaching you, breaking old things and
:just being that person for you, feeling
:new, replacing the old, all of it. But there will come a time,
:there will come a time when everything that you have gleaned and everything that you
:have learned in those intimate seasons, everything that he has poured into
:you, you have accountability for. At his
:feet are seasons in which we lean in, glean and grow. And
:they are crucial to adding layers and depth
:to your life because of the revelations
:as he speaks and as he pours and as he does
:all of this.
:But here's the thing. If seasons
:of spiritual intimacy are sustained, yet nothing is done with the wisdom and
:revelation gained, you may become root bound and
:self focused. Seasons of
:learning must be followed by
:obedience or we do not grow.
:Pastor Wayne used to look at me and go, barbie, come out,
:come out. I get that you're seeking him, but we're trying to minister
:to a body of people here. Come out and take everything that
:he just spoke into your life and share it.
:God growing us, the teacher teaching us,
:yes, it is the most wonderful thing. But he isn't
:just teaching us for us, he's teaching us
:for everybody. He's teaching
:so that you can Take it out. He's teaching so
:we can take it out.
:The next time we see Mary. The next time we
:see Mary
:is Lazarus. Her brother has died. And
:the scriptures tell us that she was in the house and that
:Martha had already seen Jesus. And
:she comes back to the house, and she says, mary,
:the teacher has come, and he's asking
:for you. See, she spoke to Mary at the place that
:Mary knew the teacher. Can you even imagine those
:words being spoken to you, Kevin, the teacher has come,
:and he's asking for you. And it said she got up
:immediately. I think I would, too.
:Well, maybe I would,
:because I believe he speaks to us all the time, and I believe
:he draws us all of the time. And we choose
:a little square box with people running around on it.
:God's going, if you would just come. The teacher's coming. So we
:see her run to him. We see her run to.
:The teacher has come, and he's calling for you.
:Hmm. Look what she
:does. It says, when
:Mary came to where Jesus was and she saw him, she
:fell down at his feet,
:broken. She had lost her brother. She. She was in a season of mourning
:and loss. But she throws herself at his feet.
:And she says, if you had been here, he wouldn't have died.
:And the scripture says that he saw her tears.
:It says that he saw her tears.
:And the scripture tells me that he groaned.
:He groaned. The groaning that he does here, it says,
:when Mary came, it says he groaned the spirit and was
:troubled. The word used there is embryo
:maomi. It's intensive. And it is this groaning
:as painfully moved as an
:intercession in nature. He groans and
:he groans because of what he sees.
:Not just Mary. We see that as they move toward Lazarus, when he
:says, where have they laid him? And they head toward the tomb, the other people
:are weeping, and it says, jesus sees them, and he
:groans again. The first time.
:The first time he groans, it's this. In the same way the Spirit helps us
:in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the
:Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groaning.
:That's the first groan. That's the first time
:when she's at his feet and she's calling out to this
:teacher, show me how to walk this out.
:Show me what to do, Lord, if
:you had been here. And he groans
:in intercession. And then as he goes a little bit further
:and sees the people and sees all of the weeping, the second time he
:groans. And this time when he groans,
:it's the same Usage of the word where it says, all
:creation groans in
:anticipation of his coming. The first time that
:he groans, he groans in intercession. And the next time, I would just present
:to you that standing at the tomb of a dead man who has
:been asleep for three days, and this time he says, father, I know that
:you have heard me. Well, we don't see any words where he's spoken to his
:Father before. But what we do see is him interceding with a
:groaning that we can't understand. Father, I know that you have heard me
:me understand. When you don't have words,
:he hears you. And so this time, when he groans
:in the same way that creation groans, I believe when he
:said with the second time, when he did that, I believe that that
:groan shook the earth. And I believe that
:wherever Lazarus was at that moment, that
:groan said, come out
:the creative breath that brings life.
:See? Jesus responds,
:Jesus responds,
:We are not the only ones who respond in those moments. I think I
:jumped you guys ahead. So
:are you guys on 12? Okay. All
:right, here's the thing. Upon that layer
:of teacher, upon that place
:in this moment, this intimate
:sharing, this miraculous moment with the Teacher,
:she now adds to knowing him as teacher.
:She now knows him as the resurrection and the
:life because she has experienced it
:firsthand. And see, when we allow
:the Lord to begin to build upon those revelations
:in our life, the most amazing thing
:begins to happen. This is the way I see it. The multifaceted
:layers of God are revealed in our intimate encounters with Him. Our
:revelation should be revelation expands, folding in
:and over itself and multiplying.
:Guys, it just begins, this
:snowball in the Spirit that just adds and
:grabs and moves and elevates and
:expands as we allow those revelations to
:take root in our life until we have but one
:response. And see, this takes us
:to the third time that we see Mary in Scripture.
:Having come through all of those places, having
:experienced him in all of these ways,
:we see the most beautiful thing happen.
:And Mary, only the third time we've heard her name,
:only the third time we've seen her. But we've watched her
:experiences. We've watched the Lord minister to her.
:We've watched him take the boundaries off of her life. We've watched him
:draw her. We've watched him make a place and a space
:for her, to welcome her into a discipleship
:relationship with him so that he can teach her, so that she
:can grow and these things can be added to her. And then not only
:that, he comes in her grief, in her
:brokenness, and calls for her.
:And then he does the most amazing miracle
:in her life. What do you do when the Lord has
:been that good to you? What do you do when the
:Lord has been that good to you guys? When I
:come in here, there are so many times that I come in here on Sundays,
:and I'll stand right there. And my mind can be everywhere else but
:here. It can be running through what I forgot to do
:or what it can be running through these places. But
:do you know what can bring me in? Do you know what can bring in
:all of those frayed edges, all of those moments when I begin to go,
:God, you've been so good to me. And I begin to recount
:his goodness. And I begin to think, see, the enemy wants you to come in.
:And thinking of all of the places that you failed or you fallen, all of
:the places that you're not getting what you want. And this is happening,
:and this happening. But we come in here to bring an offering
:before him. And I'm not talking about money. I'm talking about a
:fragrant offering that causes him to lean
:over and inhale this fragrance. Coming off
:of my life. Coming off of your life.
:Do you come in with an offering
:to pour at his feet?
:Mary took a pound of very costly oil,
:anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet
:with her hair. Wiped his
:feet with her hair. Think
:about that, it says, and the
:house was filled with the fragrance
:of the oil. It only takes one.
:It only takes one. Sister Hensley, growing
:up, being at the Church of God in Oak Ridge,
:when she decided to take a lap around the
:church, I'm telling you, when that woman, who I
:thought was old at the time, but she was probably my age now anyway, like
:I said, she wasn't old anyway.
:She didn't do anything lightly. Nothing.
:And when she would stand up and she
:would begin to bless the Lord, and she would begin to call on his names,
:and she would begin to speak his name, and she would just begin to move
:a little bit. She would just begin to move a little bit. And we would
:all, like, step over to the side. We knew what was coming. And she would
:just begin to bless the Lord. And pretty soon all of
:those declarations, all of the goodness of God would move her
:out of that pew, and everybody just make a way. But you know what would
:happen is when she did this, the fragrance did this,
:and we were all participants in her worship,
:it would be my prayer. It would be my hope. It would be just the
:most beautiful thing, guys, if we can come into this
:house, whenever we come into this house, carrying,
:not searching for, carrying oil
:and carrying the fragrance of God, so that when
:we're called to release it, we can release it, release that
:fragrance. Ay, yai yi, yi, yi.
:You know what?
:When Jesus looked. Looked at Martha,
:when Jesus looked at Martha and said, you're just
:distracted. You're just distracted.
:Mary has chosen the better thing,
:and it will not be taken away from her. Mary
:has chosen the better thing. What better
:thing has she chosen? She has chosen to be
:discipled by the Teacher. She has
:chosen to sit at his feet. She has
:chosen to find that place in him repeatedly, over and
:over and over in her life.
:She has allowed him to build layer upon layer
:upon layer of revelation of his nature and his character and
:his facets in her life. So when
:you see this, when it says, Mary
:has chosen the better thing, it was not about
:giving up helping in the kitchen. It was not about giving
:up this or giving up that. It was about making
:a choice to be discipled at the
:feet of Jesus. And guys,
:his word is true when he says, this will never be taken
:from her. Thousands of years later,
:we're still talking about it. We're still talking about
:the decision that she made in that moment to sit
:at his feet. So this is my challenge to you
:this week. This is my challenge to you
:this week. Find
:a place at his feet. I don't care
:if it's a shoe closet. I don't care if you're sitting
:on your porch. I don't care if you're sitting in your car at
:lunchtime. I want you to mentally and physically
:find a place at his feet
:spiritually and let him know
:your decision. Let him know your decision.
:I'm coming to your feet. I'm taking this not
:as an observer, not as someone on the sofa, not as someone
:reclining at the table, but I'm coming to your
:feet. And this is the position that I
:choose to sit at the feet
:of my teacher. Amen, Father God,
:I thank you so much for another opportunity to open your word
:and let you breathe over us. And so, Father, I'm asking that you
:would just awaken each of us, Father, in the depths of our spirit, that we
:would literally hear you calling, let the Teacher call
:for us and may we run toward his feet
:in Jesus name, Amen and
:amen. I love you guys.
